The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip and husband of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, is dead.

This was announced by the Queen on Royal.uk, the official website of the Royal family on Friday, April 9.

The statement read, "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

"His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.

"Further announcements will made in due course.

"The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss."

Prince Philip had been ill for some time.

He left the hospital and returned to Windsor Castle around mid-March after being treated for an infection and undergoing a medical procedure, Buckingham Palace had said in a statement.

Philip, 99, was first admitted to a London hospital February 16. He spent time in two different hospitals for a total of 28 nights, his longest stay yet.
