Stuart Symington, the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, says the 2019 elections will determine the future of the nation.

He said this while addressing journalist in Wednesday, after a closed-door meeting with Nyesom Wike, Governor of Rivers State, at the Government House in Port-Harcourt.

Symington urged all concerned institutions to do what is in the interest of the nation, just as he called on stakeholders to play their roles in promoting credible and peaceful elections.

His words: “All of the institutions of government must do what is right. Election is not a matter of life and death. It is a matter of defining the future of Nigeria. There must be free, fair and credible elections.

"I am quite confident that on election day, the sons and daughters of the powerful will not be out there causing violence.”

According to him, the idea of a free people with the ability to decide the best candidates to lead them forward remains the most important idea in the world.

He also encouraged Nigerians to be bold enough to shun invitations from politicians and stakeholders to be elements of violence in the forthcoming elections.

On the campaigns, he urged voters to always question the candidates on ways through which they seek to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people.
