A church building belonging to the Lord's Chosen Charismatic Movement collapsed on Tuesday, in Asaba, the capital city of Delta State, claiming one life and leaving several others wounded.
The collapse almost claimed the lives of over 1000 worshippers and children who cheated death by a whisker.
It was gathered that the church which is located at Jarret Street is the regional headquarters of the church, with a smaller building where members worship pending the completion of the building.
The frontage of the church building and other parts of the church under construction were completely destroyed, trapping four persons working on the site.
According to an eyewitness, one of the trapped victims, identified as Obiora Ikechukwu in his 20s, was among several other victims seen being rushed to St. Rebecca's Hospital where he gave up the ghost.
SaharaReporters learned that the church collapse was due to the alleged usage of substandard materials.
As worshippers and some residents of the area were seen discussing the incident, the atmosphere was a gloomy one.
Confirming the story, one of the church leaders who did not mention his name disclosed that only four persons who were working on the building sustained injuries, adding that he could not ascertain what really caused the collapse of the building.
The church later, however, confirmed that a senior pastor and some elders of the church were invited by the police for questioning over the collapsed building but were later allowed to leave after the questioning, adding that investigation has commenced into the collapsed building by the police.
