The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has condemned the deadly attack on a military base in Bosso in the southeastern part of the Niger Republic by Boko Haram on June 3, which claimed the lives of 30 Nigerien soldiers and two from neighboring Nigeria.

Another sixty-seven soldiers were reportedly injured during the audacious assault.

A statement issued by the Director of the Information Department of the OIC, Maha Mostafa Akeel, quoted the Secretary-General of the organization, Iyad Ameen Madani, as expressing dismay at the continuation of senseless violence by the insurgent group in the Lake Chad Basin as well as conveying deep sympathy and condolences to the authorities of the two countries and families of the victims.

Mr. Madani reaffirmed the principled stance of the OIC against terrorism and assured countries in the region of the organization's determination towards continued support for counterterrorism.

“We hereby called on the Lake Chad Basin countries who are also member states of the OIC to activate as a matter of urgency the Multinational Joint Task Force as a regional initiative towards shoring up the fight and accelerating the defeat of Boko Haram terrorists, who remain a threat to the region.”
