Senate President Bukola Saraki arrived in Maiduguri on Monday morning to evaluate the ongoing fight against Boko Haram. Maiduguri is the capital of Borno State, which is home to the terrorist organization and has hosted the majority of its deadly attacks. More than 14,000 people in the State have died in violence related to the struggle.
The embattled Senator Saraki will also visit camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs) who have been uprooted in the battle between the insurgency and multinational forces, which include Nigerian troops. He will additionally meet with local traditional rulers and Governor Kashim Shettima.
Police documents reveal that Mr. Saraki stole several billion naira from various financial institutions while he was governor of Kwara State. His wife Toyin Saraki is currently under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for playing a significant role in laundering Mr. Saraki’s stolen funds.
